Mt Messenger bypass project to be accelerated
Bypasses at Mt Messenger and Awakino Gorge Tunnel have received the green light thanks to Government funding announced today.
Prime Minister John Key has confirmed the Government will spend $80 to $90 million constructing a bypass at Mt Messenger, and $9 to $15 million on a bypass of the Awakino Gorge Tunnel on State Highway 3.
“This is great announcement for the region and another step forward to ensure that Taranaki’s economy remains resilient.” says Jonathan Young MP for New Plymouth.
“With a large majority of the users for Mt Messenger from the New Plymouth electorate I know this announcement will be certainly welcomed. Transport companies will find the journey far less expensive, and the increase in both national and international visitors to our region will find an easier and safer route”.
A key freight link between the Waikato and Taranaki regions, the affected section of State Highway 3 has become increasingly unsafe, and prone to unpredictable, periodic closures.
“The new route will provide certainty on a road which has been fraught with closures after every heavy weather event since construction and will still allow visitors to experience the beauty of the northern entrance to the province." says Chester Borrows MP for Whanganui.
This project forms part of the Government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Programme which was announced by the Prime Minister in 2014, and is designed to speed up the completion of transport projects considered to be important to the regions.
