Opunake Coastal Column - Christmas Edition
Another year nearly finished, and what an interesting couple of weeks in politics it has been!
It came as quite a shock to the country when our former Prime Minister John Key stepped down from his role. He has been an excellent leader, and has seen our country through some very tough times over the last eight years. He leaves his position with the country in a strong and stable position. My congratulations to our new Prime Minister Bill English and Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett, who will undoubtedly do an outstanding job of leading the country going into the 2017 election.
We are now well into the Christmas season, with long hot days around the corner, ice creams, jandals, BBQs and beach holidays – reminding us that New Zealand is indeed one of the greatest places to live in the world.
Christmas is often the time we find to stop with the busyness (after Christmas day of course!), and put our feet up for a while. We spend time with friends and family and look back at what has been, what we are grateful for today and what may lie ahead in the New Year. I am exceptionally grateful to be the Member of Parliament for the number two region in the world, as recently announced by Lonely Planet. The New Plymouth electorate runs from Waitara to Opunake and everything in between. I have continually advocated for this electorate and am strongly committed to continue to build this region, create new initiatives, bring together stronger collaborations for growth and see our people and families and whanau prosper.
The famous writer Charles Dickens once said: “I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”
With the joy, peace and goodwill that comes with Christmas that is a great new year’s resolution.
Maura and I would like to wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas.
