Taranaki is definitely the place to be over summer, with so many great opportunities, whether you were on holiday or working through the break. I hope you had an enjoyable festive season and are looking forward to the challenges and prospects that 2020 will bring.

The election date has been announced and the countdown is on to September 19th. If previous elections are anything to go by, it’ll be hotly contested.

With that in mind it’s timely to remind you that it is my privilege to represent all the people of New Plymouth electorate, regardless of political leaning. If you have an issue that I can help with, I will. As an Electorate MP, I am responsible for making your voice heard at Parliament. I am available to meet with constituents about any queries they have. Sometimes these involve local issues, legislation or policy. Other times they are having difficulties with government agencies that I may be able to assist with. It is important that you know you can approach me without feeling politically pressured.

Having said that, I’m proud of what the previous National-led government achieved here in infrastructure, health and education spending. We had plans for much more, particularly in the area of social housing and will be looking to remind people of the facts during the election campaign. We’ve been working hard in opposition, to make sure we have policies that work to improve the lives of all New Zealanders.

Last year, the National Party researched and released ten discussion documents with a huge range of ideas. We asked for feedback and will incorporate that into aspirational policies to benefit everyone. Those documents are still available for you to read at https://www.national.org.nz/discussion_documents . We want them to be as relevant as possible, so please have a look and let us know your thoughts. I am currently working on a discussion paper for Energy.

I am very proud to have been New Plymouth’s MP since 2008. The electorate stretches from Opunake township to the top of the Mountain and north to Waitara. It’s a diverse area and I’m always keen to hear your viewpoints, so if you haven’t already, please take the opportunity this year to come and see me and tell me how you see the future of our truly special place.
